Germany Growing Together
Willie Brandt??™s speech on November 10, 1989 says it all. Germany can now start growing together as one country along with the other countries in Europe and become a unified continent again. The East Germans are used to a socialist way of life. The elder generations remember pre-war life and long to have it back. The younger generations do not even know any different. The West Germans are leading a more normal way of life, but still disapprove of this division that occurred many years ago. Now the division has crumbled and there is unity in the near future. Emotions run high as people flood the border to get out of a controlled life to freedom. The only feeling that I could feel that could be close to this emotional high and relief would be the day that I left home to live on my own. The feeling of freedom from a higher power (parents) and to be able to grow as I wanted to was a great feeling. The free people in West Germany accept the East German people with open arms as most of them have family that are now to be free from this division of states. There is mass celebration in the streets of Berlin. There are tears of joy and happiness everywhere. With two completely different lifestyles coming together, how will the country grow together A different relationship will evolve because they are coming together in the name of freedom and they will grow together.
I think that growing together will be a good thing. So many different views and opinions can make life really enjoyable. Especially with the knowledge of having a life without freedom, people can veer away from the things that they know made life miserable under the East German policies. People will be able to buy things they could not before and give their families the things they need. Updated vehicles and renovation of housing are two really important ones that come to mind. Waiting for years for permits for these things will be a thing of the past. Families can now spend more quality time together without the permits to travel across a border. Life in general will be better.
The Wall will always be a historic remembrance in European history. Its existence marked a division of a whole continent and its way of living. The Nazi regime started all of this when they thought they could take over all of Europe and possibly the World. When the powers of that war, the ally??™s and axis, could not agree, there was a division in Germany and Europe. This is where they went their separate ways and the segregation occurred. The Wall was constructed as a border between these powers and also the people that lived there. They had no choice of where they wanted to live or the lifestyle they wanted to live out. That was all decided by the political powers. Now all of this is behind them, a new unified Germany and Europe as a whole can grow and prosper together. To remember all of this division and the Wall, a portion of that wall still stands. Forever it will be a reminder to people of German history and a way of life that is no more.
Not only did this division have its affects on European countries, but also affected other countries as well. The Soviet Union did not have to worry about its subsidiary states anymore. They could concentrate on their own country. They were also enemies with the United States because of this division. The United States did not have to worry about the Soviet Union having too much control in Europe any more. The United States and The Soviet Union were able to have talks and negotiate on peace now that this unity is taking place. A nuclear arms treaty eventually came to be between these two countries.
Germany was divided. Europe was divided. West Germany had allies with the Western European countries and the United States. East Germany had allies (axis) with the eastern European countries and the Soviet Union. With unification, Europe can grow as a whole and flourish. A general monetary unit could be created. The use and availability of resources could be utilized together. Transportation across Europe would be easier and more economical. Brandt states that Germany would like to rebuild itself on its own. They should not hinder their obligations to Europe and peace by asking for solutions to any of their problems and that they really have to figure it out on their own and grow as a unified country. I agree with this. Germany has caused problems in the world for many years because of this great division. They should be responsible for their own actions and not need help from others. It is going to take a lot of time to get to the point they want to be, but in the end it will all be worth it. They will have a country that is accepted worldwide and a population of people that are living their lives the way they want to.
The way I see it, the new unified Germany could actually be perceived as a global unification. It created peace talks between the United States and the Soviet Union. It brought together many countries in Europe that were once divided. Political policies can now be more balanced across the continent. People can now live free and not be bound by a higher power. Lifestyles will change and so will the country as a whole. The world became a better place because of the demise of the wall. Europe can grow and Germany can too, all together as a complete unified continent.
